As with all new garage construction projects, preparing the foundation was one of the most important steps. We add four-inch concrete floors reinforced with steel rebar and prepared on top of crushed stone.

The frame of the enclosure is anchored to the floor and built to withstand the elements. The roof was designed to match the aesthetics of the existing structures on the property. It included large overhangs on each side to protect the foundation from rain. An exterior door with a full-view window panel was added on the side of the enclosure.

The enclosure also included two overhead doors. An overhead door (OHD) is the most common type of garage door. The door moves up and over your head on a metal track secured to the ceiling. Each sectional door included four large panel sections connected with hinges.

We also installed lighting. The enclosure included two large lights mounted to the ceiling to fully illuminate the interior.

The client wanted a detached garage on their property in Wilmette. The design included a large gable roof with a steep pitch to provide more space in the interior for a loft. A gable roof includes two slopes with flat, triangular ends referred to as gables.

The garage included a wood-paneled door to match the aesthetic of the rest of the garage and property. We went with a dark stain that matched the surrounding fencing. Everything from the trim to the exterior lights was selected to create a consistent look.

The interior included space for a vehicle. It also included a loft, which is a space built directly under the roof. A floor with a drop-down attic ladder was built to convert the space into an extra room. The loft was carpeted and wired for electricity. As you can see from the picture, the client turned the loft into an extra living space, complete with a mini fridge, a couch, chairs, lighting, and a TV mounted to the wall.

Other features included windows in the loft facing the front and back of the garage. We also added a side door for access to the interior of the garage.

The resulting garage is a great example of what can be done with limited space. The garage made good use of the client’s available land and even added an extra room in the form of a converted loft.
